Cattle

Orkney Auction Mart sold 3 prime cattle, 11 store cattle and 50 Over Thirty Month cattle through the ring on Monday 10 November.

Prime cattle sold to 160 p/kg for a Simmental cross steer from Bews, Gorn, Westray which scaled 595 kgs and realised £952 to E Flett, Butcher, Stromness.

Over Thirty Month cattle sold to 120.2 p/kg for a Belgian Blue cross cow from Chalmers, Mouseland, Stromness which scaled 620 kg’s and realised £745. Top price per head was £860 for a Limousin cow from Nicolson, Gitterpitten, Rendall which scaled 765 kgs.

Two consignsments of store cattle sold to 147.4 p/kg for a pen of three Limousin cross steers from Shearer, Airy, Stronsay which scaled 475 kg’s and realised £700. Store steers averaged 139 p/kg with store heifers averaging 126.4 p/kg.

 

Orkney Auction Mart sold 5 prime cattle, 212 store cattle and 73 Over Thirty Month cattle through the ring on Monday 20 October.

Prime cattle sold to 155 p/kg for a Charolais cross heifer from Cooper, Cleat, Stronsay which scaled 575 kgs and realised £891.25 to E R & T Craigie, Butcher, Tankerness. Prime steers sold to 152 p/kg for a Charolais cross from Scott, Netherhill Tankerness which scaled 580 kgs and realised £881.60 to W Lobban & Son, Butcher, Kirkwall.

Over Thirty Month cattle sold to 134.2 p/kg for an Aberdeen Angus cross cow from Fersness Farms, Eday which scaled 570 kg’s and realised £765.

A smaller entry of store cattle again showed signs of the recent poor weather although strong, well presented stock continued to sell well. Store steers averaged 144 p/kg and sold to 170.6 p/kg for a pen of three Charolais crosses from Skea, Barns of Ayre, Deerness which scaled 510 kg’s and realised £870. Top price per head was £1,000 for a Charolais cross from Dennison, Odiness, Stronsay which scaled 590 kg’s. Store heifers averaged 132 p/kg and sold to 150.9 p/kg for a Charolais cross from Nicolson & Eunson, Caskald, Shapinsay which scaled 530 kg’s and realised £800. This was also the top price per head.

Store cattle averages by breed: Charolais steer (57 sold) 152.6 p/kg, (32) 138.1 p/kg; Aberdeen Angus steer (33) 136.2 p/kg, heifer (9) 120.1 p/kg; Limousin steer (19) 144.6 p/kg, heifer (15) 129.7 p/kg; Simmental steer (29) 143.3 p/kg, heifer (12) 125.9 p/kg.
